In the late 18th and early 19th century Hydra was famed for its intrepid fleet of freebooting merchantmen.

Shipowners amassed immense fortunes from blockade-running during the Napoleonic Wars.

It was during these years of high prosperity that the house was built.

In 1962 the original mansion was converted into a first class hotel.
